Fire Cupping
Cupping is used to increase blood flow, move stagnant Qi in the body, soften fascial and musculature adhesions and in Chinese Medicine is thought to release excess heat and dampness in the body! Cups suction onto the skin and are left for anywhere from 1-5minutes, with a slight pinching sensation at the beginning that shortly subsides and turns into what feels like a heavy weight before the cups are gently popped off giving SO much relief. Typically there will be marks left on the skin, these are NOT bruises although they may appear that way they are actually the result of petechiae forming under the skin when the blood is drawn to the surface. Depending on how stagnant the area of the body is and how hydrated an individual is affects the time the marks will last, hydrating and using arnica can speed up the healing process.
Gua Sha
Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese practice aimed at moving Qi or energy within the body. Similar to cupping but administered through a different technique, the practitioner will use a tool (ceramic spoon, horn, metal gua sha tool, jar lid, etc) and scrape the skin with a moderate pressure. If stagnation is present “petechiae” (small blood vessels) will begin to form under the skin. Gua Sha can increase range of motion and help with musculoskeletal problems. Cupping and Gua Sha are both used by the practitioner as a diagnostic tool, helping to illuminate the level of stagnation, hydration and musculature tension.
